Hebrews 3:1-6

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Turn with me in your Bibles to Heb. 3:1-6.

  1. Last week we looked at Heb. 2:5-18.

  1. And we saw, Yahweh put man in charge of all things on earth:

  1. He started off by saying He didn’t subject the world to come. (And then he

       made the reference to angels)

  1. The word “subject” was made up of two root words. (The first to assign, and

the second is under, meaning to assign under the world to come)

  1. We went to the creation story in Genesis. (We saw in two different passage

we were to reign over and protect the creation Yahweh created)

  1. This was also consistent throughout Scripture. (We looked at some of the

        Psalm passages)

  1. But then we went to New Testament through Revelation. (And we saw we will

reigning with Him in the future)

  1. Second, Yashua was made lower than the angels for a period:

  1. We saw this was for a period of time. (He was before time, and then He

man for a period, lower in rank than the angels)

  1. But then He would return to His original rank. (GK says for a little space, or

       just a short period)

  1. The reason is. (So we would be able to experience Yahweh’s grace, GK

       favor and loving kindness)

  1. And He brought us back. (Through His suffering and death we would

become sons and daughters through Him)

  1. Third, He became the perfect sacrifice:

  1. Remember, not just because He was without sin. (Being without sin is what

qualified Him as the Lamb of God)

  1. Remember we talked about John the Baptist. (He was a Levite Priest and He

proclaimed Yashua to be the Lamb of God, or the Sacrifice)

  1. He is bringing us back to the Tree of Life. (And paradise according to Rev.

2:7 remember we were removed from that because of sin)

  1. We through Him became Abraham’s Offspring. (Which is who Yashua

reachout to, not angels or anyone else)

  1. And He gave us our identity. (Abraham’s offspring, crafted in to Israel,

       Jere. 11:1-16, Rom. 11:17)

  1. And Yashua became our High Priest. (And our mediator between us and the

Father serving in the Temple we will see this later)

  1. Now we are going to look at Yashua being greater than Moses if you will.

  1. But we are also going to look at some more aspects of who He is.

  1. Let’s read Heb. 3:1-6, Pray!

  1. Let’s look at one more aspect of what Yashua did and who He is. V1

  1. We need to look at three things in us and Him.

  1. We are holy brothers:

  1. This word “holy” means. (GK means most holy, or saint, but is made up

of two root words one is clean and perfect, and the other is to cherish)

  1. The word” brothers” means. (GK born of the same Father, or someone

from the same country or nationality) Look at Rom. 6:1-11 a new life

           Rom. 11:17 grafted in.

  1. This is what Yahweh’s word says. (Our job is to live it out, and to start

viewing each other and treating each other as His Word says)

  1. We are companions in a heavenly calling:

  1. This word “companion” means. (GK partakers, sharing in, a partner in,

the root word means to belong to, we belong to something)

  1. We have a “calling”. (GK for calling is a divine invitation to embrace

            something)

  1. And in this case, contextually. (It would be this salvation and the working

of the gifts mentioned two sections ago)

  1. We are called here to consider Yashua the apostle and high priest of our

Confession:

  1. This word “consider” is important. (It means to observe Yashua fully, or

to fix our eyes upon Him)

  1. The word “apostle” means. (GK one sent forth with orders and the root

word means to set apart for a purpose)

  1. Here the writer brings up High Priest. (GK means Chief Priest, this is

setting up a couple of ideas, one there is something the writer is going to

discuss we haven’t seen yet, two we are to serve according to His

example because of our calling or invitation) Ex. 19:5-6 priests and

a holy nation and 1 Peter 2:6-10 same thing.

  1. Yashua was faithful to the One who appointed Him. V2-4

  1. We need to look at the difference between Moses and Yashua.

  1. Yashua was faithful to the one who appointed Him:

  1. The word “appointed” means. (GK to be an author of something, so in

in this case to the One who authored it, the Father)

  1. The writer is beginning to develop and idea. (And begins to teach the

difference between Moses and Yashua) V2

  1. Both are faithful . (But it says Moses was faithful in Yahweh’s household,

and the writer gets this from Num. 12:7)

  1. But let’s look at verse 3 in this chapter:

  1. Yashua was considered worthy of more glory than Moses. (Here is were

           difference come into play)

  1. Moses here is considered as part of the house. (Or as we could say Moses

a part of the household, a member of the family)

  1. And the builder of the house. (GK for builder is the one who builds,

equips, and makes ready the house)

  1. Now look at this in verse 4. (The one who build the house is GK God and

is a reference to Father, Son, and Holy Spirit)

  1. These verses set apart whose who:

  1. Remember, some of these listeners were Jewish. (And they were still

learning the whole idea of who Yashua was)

  1. Some of the listeners had come from Gentile background. (And they were

learning about their identity in Yashua, as Israel)

  1. So the writer speaks to both groups. (One about what Yahweh’s has been

          all along throughout history)

III.  Moses was a faithful servant. V5-6

  1. We are going to look at several things here.

  1. Moses was “Faithful”:

  1. The word “faithful” means. (GK faithful, trustworthy, but also means he

was trustworthy in the transaction of business, the execution of

commands, and the discharges of duties)

  1. So Moses did what he was told. (And he did so obediently as he was told

           to do)

  1. Now look, the writer says “as a servant”. (The word servant here denotes

servant that is above all other servants in the house, the head servant)

  1. But there is something future to him as well:

  1. He was a testimony to the future. (GK testimony means a witness to the

the things that would be spoken in the future)

  1. Moses was a shadow picture. (Of one that would be coming, of course

Yashua, or the Messiah which is the same)

  1. So this still makes him someone we learn from. (This was a very

important statement for us to get, this has been over look in

           importance)

  1. Now look at Yashua in verse 6:

  1. But the Messiah was faithful as a Son. (GK faithful, or trustworthy as a

           Son over the Father’s house)

  1. Brings with it the idea from chap. 1. (He is faithful as the heir of all things

the one over all the servants)

  1. And we are that household. (GK is family and tabernacle, this is where

NT theology seem to reject Israel, and make it about the church)

  1. But the writer makes us part of the same household. (As described with

Moses, there is no distinction between then and now, but we must

           Remain faithful)
