Hebrews 2:5-18

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Turn with me in your Bibles to Heb. 2:5-18.

  1. Last week we took a look at Heb. 2:1-4.

  1. First we saw, We are not neglect what has been said:

  1. The writer tells us we must pay even more attention. (The word Must

in the GK means it is necessary for us to pay attention)

  1. The writer also told us it is more than just listening. (He was speaking

obedience, to listen in GK is to hear and be obedient)

  1. The writer said if we don’t do it this way. (We will drift away from the

truth which will result in eternal consquences)

  1. Second we saw, The message is legally binding:

  1. The writer speaks of the ministries for Yashua and the angels. (And he

shows how important the message the angels brought meaning the

       Law)

  1. And he tells us the Law was legally binding. (In fact everyone who

broke the Law received a just punishment)

  1. But Yashua, who is the Son of God. (Brought us salvation, so how can

we neglect what He brought, He is superior to the angels)

  1. In fact the writer poses the question. (How will we escape and have

safety if we neglect the very One who gives us the safety)

  1. Remember, salvation in the GK is in reference to. (Both present and

future, and means deliverance, safety, and preservation)

  1. And third we saw, They saw all of this verified:

  1. Remember, we traced these signs. (Through Scripture, and we saw

Yahweh used these things to give witness to Himself)

  1. And Yahweh also gave witness to those He sent. (Moses was one and

Yashua to, and according to Mark 16 to His congregation)

  1. Yashua Himself told the Jewish leaders as well as Peter. (You have

seen the Father has sent Yashua because of the signs and miracles)

  1. But the writer also says He gave gifts to men. (And the word gift in the

GK means distribution and we found that in 1 Cor. 12)

  1. But we also found it was not just a New Testament concept. (We looked

Ex 35:30-31 where the Holy Spirit was given to men, and they were

The ones to build the Tabernacle)

  1. And this is done according to His will. (GK to carry out His purposes

for the congregation, so it would be a witness of Him)

  1. Next the writer is going to establish Yashua’s humanity.

  1. He already established who He is in the heavens, but now we will look at

Him coming in the flesh.

  1. Let’s read Heb. 2:5-18, Pray!

  1. Yahweh put man in charge of all things on earth. V5-8

  1. The writer uses three different passages of Scripture to refer to the

Beginning.

  1.   The writer points to the contrast between mans and angels:

  1. Yahweh did not subject the world to the angels. (GK for subject is

is made up of two root words, one is to assign and the other is

under, or to assign under the whole earth)

  1. We find this is Genesis 1:27-30 and 2:15. (Heb. 1:28 “subdue”

means to have dominion and to reign over, and in 2:15 “work”

and “watch over” means to be a husbandmen, and to guard it)

  1. So Yahweh had given to man His creation. (So man could reign over

it, and so man could guard and protect it His creation.)

  1. Well we know what happen there. (Instead of man reigning over it

and guarding and protecting it he turned the creation over to the

            reigning from the Devil)

  1. Then the writer goes to Psalm 8:3-6:

  1. Once again we find these things being taught. (A little lower than

           God, Heb. means eloheem)

  1. And in verse 6. (The Heb, word for lord is maw-shal’ and

it  means to reign over the works of your hands)

  1. If you look at this passage carefully. (The writer also

includes the heavens, moon and stars as the works of

His hands, which tells us we were suppose to be

           Reigning over it all)

  1. Which tells me that the heavens and the earth. (Were

affected by sin, look at Revelation where everything is

            coming a part)

  1. Let’s look at Job 7:17:

  1. First, Job says what is man that you. (Heb. Gaw-dal,

magnify him, lift him up, and promote him)

  1. Second, That you pay so much attention. (Heb. means that

place your heart on him, or Heb. in Ex 19:5 possesion

           means wealth or treasure)

  1. This gives us a whole different idea of how Yahweh views us.

(And sets up a whole new idea about why Yashua had

To come to redeem us, and we will look into that)

  1. Yashua was made lower than the angels for a period.

       V9-13

  1. Here we find the redemption of all He created.

  1. Now Yashua is made lower than the angels:

  1. This is an interesting statement. (Here we find Yashua, not

created to be a little lower than Yahweh, but who is

Elyoheem in every way, being made lesser in rank)

  1. The words “made lower than the angels. (GK is to be made

less than, gives the idea of going from one rank to a

            lower rank)

  1. But this was only for a short period. (GK means for a little

space, or time, idea of returning to who He originally

           was)

  1. The reason He became lower for that period is given:

  1. So that by God’s grace. (GK Yahweh’s favor and loving

kindness could be experienced by everyone)

  1. This was done. (Through Yashua’s death and suffering,

Yahweh’s favor and loving kindness could not be

Experienced by man unless Yashua suffered and died)

  1. This is the only way. (He gave us the only way to be

brought back into what He intended us to be)

  1. And look what it did:

  1. We are brought into being sons through His suffering. (He

suffered so we would become sons through Him)

  1. And look at this carefully. (He became that perfect

sacrifice through the suffering He endured )Look at

           Phil 2:8 Humble through obedience.

  1. And it is through His work. (That we all have one Father,

and Yashua considers us His brothers)Look at Ps.

22:22-24 Proclaiming Yahweh’s praise in the

           congregation

III.  He became the perfect sacrifice. V14-18

  1. But not just because He had no sin.

  1. He had to be made flesh:

  1. Because we are flesh and blood. (Yashua had to became as

we are, He had to share this in common with us)

  1. Through Him becoming flesh and blood. (He could destroy

the one who had the power of death over us, Satan)

  1. Let’s look at Gen. 3:19. (You were given life after being

formed from the dirt, and you will return to what you

were before you were given life)

  1. Look at Gen. 3:22-23. (Man was removed from access to

to the tree of life, Satan became mans master)

  1. Look at Rev. 2:7. (Yashua has is bringing us back and we

will be given access once again the the Tree of Life in

           the Garden)

  1. Look at who He reaches out to help:

  1. It isn’t angels. (Look carefully at this because it is

important for us to recognize our identity)

  1. It is Abraham’s offspring Yashua reached out to help. (Look at

Gen. 17:4-5 the father of many nations, Rom. 9:6-8

Through faith we are the seed, Gal. 3:29 Abraham seed

           By faith)

  1. And through that we are grafted into Israel. (Look at Rom.

11:17, look at Jer. 11:1 he is speaking to Judah, now

Look at Jer. 11;16-17) No doubt about who this is in

           Rom. 11

  1. He had to become flesh and blood to be our High Preist:

  1. So He could be merciful and faithful. (So He could make

sacrifice for our sins to reconcile us to Yahweh)

  1. So as we see it is more than just the perfect sacrifice. (He

becomes our High Priest, and we will see this later)

  1.   We are not only reconciled. (But given our identity and

covering through His service in the Tabernacle)
