Heb. 3:7-19

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Turn with me in your Bibles to Heb. 3:7-19.

  1. Last week we took a look at Heb. 3:1-6.

  1. We saw first, One more aspect of Yashua what He did:

  1. He made of Holy Brothers. (GK consecrated, clean, perfect, and also

       cherished)

  1. The word brothers means. (GK having the same Father and also

       people from the same nation)

  1. We are companions. (Partakers, and the root word means we belong

to something, in this case Him and Israel)

  1. And we have been called. (GK given an invitation to work out or

salvation according to the gift for His purpose)

  1. And He is our apostle and High Priest. (And we will look at these

aspects of Him in the future)

  1. Second, Yashua was faithful to the One who appointed Him:

  1. The word appointed means. (GK the author of something, in the case

       in would be the Father)

  1. The writer began to make the difference between. (Moses and Yashua,

remember we talked about angels and Him, now Moses and Him)

  1. Yashua was considered having more glory. (Than Moses did, and

Moses part of the house, not over the house)

  1. But the Builder of the House is Yahweh. (GK builder means the one

not only builds, but equips and makes ready the house)

  1. Third, Moses was a faithful servant:

  1. Faithful means. (GK trustworthy, but also means he was trustworthy

in the transactions of business, and the execution of commands, and

       the discharge of duties)

  1. Moses was also a shadow picture of the future. (We know a shadow

       picture of Yashua)

  1. But we saw Yashua was a faithful Son. (Meaning the Heir of the house

not just a faithful servant but the Heir)

  1. And we are part of that household. (If we hold to our courage and our

       confidence or faith)

  1. Next we will look at some lesson from Israel in the wilderness.

  1. These are as a warning to us.

  1. Let’s read Heb. 3:7-19, Pray!

  1. We are not to harden our hearts. V7-12

  1. The writer turns to Ps 95:7-11 and Ex 17:1-7 for this example in faith

And attributes this passage to the Holy Spirit.

  1. In Ps. 95:7 it says:

  1. He is our “Eloheem” . (This means He is our Supreme God, the

one that is above all other gods)

  1. And we are the people of His pasture. (Heb. means pasture, but is

in reference to the feeding of the flock of sheep)

  1. This is important because we are going to look at this. (And just

what happened to the people in this passage, verse 8 tells us to

           not harden our hearts)

  1. This word harden. (Heb. means to be dense, severe, and to be stiff

           necked to be hard)

  1. The word “wilderness” (Heb. means pasture, so we get the idea of a

shepherd (Eloheem) leading His sheep to pasture)

  1. Now let’s pick up in Ex. 17:1-7:

  1. Now understand they had seen Yahweh work on their behalf. (They

had seen Him deliver them from Pharoh, the red sea, Turn bitter

water into drinkable, quall given to them)

  1. And now they have no water. (So they complain to Moses, to the

point Moses thought they would stone Him)

  1. Now look their complaining about Moses. (Was taken as a

against Yahweh, He is the shepherd and it is His pasture and

           His command)V1-2

  1. They were saying. (Why did you bring us out of Egypt to kill us?

Now remember, they are really saying this to Yahweh)

  1. So Moses struck the rock. (Heb. for “struck” or strike, to beat, but

it also means to give stripes)

  1. Look at 1 Cor 10:3-4. (Here Paul identifies the rock as a type of

          Messiah)

  1. The writer of Heb. points to an unbelieving heart:

  1. The word “unbelieving heart” (GK is to be faithless, one without

faith, and in Ps 95:9 the word “harden you hearts” is also

associated with strife and quarreling in the Heb.)

  1. So some of the symptoms of unbelief. (Is strife and quarreling in

the congregation, and against the leaders as well)

  1. These will not enter His rest. (Heb. repose is to remain still or at

           peace and concealed)

  1. A unbelieving heart departs from the Living God. (To depart is to

Stand off, or be aloof) Look at Ex. 20:18

  1. We are to encourage one another. V13-15

  1. We need each other as well in this process.

  1. And this is a daily thing:

  1. This word “encourage” is interesting. (GK it means to exhort or to

admonish, but it also means to call to ones side)

  1. One of the names for the Holy Spirit in the NT is Paraclete. (It means

the one who comes along side of)

  1. I have heard people say “I am not someone Holy Spirit” (And that is

true to some extent, but we are to allow the Holy Spirit to use us to

          come alongside of one another)

  1. The word “daily” here is made up of three words. (GK one means

daily, but another means throughout, but the third word means

            to tame)

  1. This gives us the idea. (That through this encouragement each day,

throughout the day, our days can be tamed or controlled)

  1. The reason is we won’t be hardened by sins deception:

  1. The word “Hardened” (GK is to be hard, but it also means to be

           made stubborn)

  1. Remember, we talked about a circumcised heart in Gal. Study. (GK

we saw the uncircumcised heart was a stubborn heart of a

disobedient heart, so we can become uncircumcised of heart

          by being deceived)

  1.   Which is why we ought to submit to one another. (So we will remain

obedient and stay away from deception) Look at Eph. 5:21 and

           1 Peter 5:5

  1. This is for the purpose of being companions with the Messiah:

  1. Remember we talked about companions. (GK means partakers of,

but it also means to share in or to participate in)

  1. This is about our ministry. (GK we will be able to participate in His

ministry, as being the Holy Nation and priests we discussed) Look

at Ex 19:5-6 and 1 Peter 2:7-9 and our salvation

  1. But look if we hold firmly to the end. (GK means if we hold the

place we placed ourselves when we started, in this case under

the truth of the Messiah, until the end)

  1. The writer goes back to Ps. 95:7-8. (Heb. “to hear” is also to obey,

or to listen intelligently and obey what is said)

III.  Unbelief will keep us from entering in. V16-19

  1. The writer is still teaching about Ps 95:7-11 and Ex 17:1-7

  1. Those that came out of Egypt with Moses:

  1. The writer in verse 16 says they heard. (But instead of being

they rebelled, GK is interesting because the “came alongside

but in this case they came alongside and embittered)

  1. So we can come alongside for the wrong purpose. (To rebel and to

           embitter those around us)

  1. We have seen this. (Those that come alongside to tell you gossip

about a leader, or someone in the congregation) Look at Ex 17:2

they came and complained about Yahweh to Moses

  1. Because of this of this happening for 40 years:

  1. They had sinned for 40 years. (And died in the desert without

Yahweh’s peace and concealment) Look at the times plagues and

           Snakes over took them

  1. Their lives were cut short. (Do we do that today? Do we cut short

           our lives?)

  1. This is a serious point and one we have to look at. (What caused

their lives to be cut short without peace and concealment?)

  1. It was unbelief:

  1. This word “unbelief” is a word we need to look at. (It means two

things, the first is unfaithfulness, or being disobedient when we

           don’t believe we don’t do)

  1. The second meaning is. (GK faithlessness so what is being said is

           not believing brings disobedience)

  1. It comes down to belief. (And what we believe will be seen in how

          we live our lives)
