Hebrews 2:1-4

INTRODUCTION:

 

1. Turn with me in your Bibles to Heb. 2:1-4.

 

2. Last week we took a look at Heb. 1:5-14.

 

3. We saw first, Yashua is the Son:

 

1. The writer shows through Scripture David as a Type or shadow picture of the

Messiah. (Throughout all of the Messiantic prophecy’s, we looked at 2

       2 Sam.7:13-16, 1 Chron. 17:12-15, Ps. 2:1-12, Jere. 23:5-6, and we even

       At New Testament in Matthew)

 

1. We look at the linage of David. (And saw Yashua coming out of the line of

        David showing the Throne would be through that line)

 

1. Even Satan knew this to be true. (And remember the temptations were

       based on His Sonship)

 

4. The second, He is the Son who sits on the divine throne:

 

1. The writer speaks of Yashua’s superiority over the angels. (He spoke in terms

       of the angels being created, Heb. aw-saw means to make, “He made”)

 

1. He called the angels being messengers. (And ministering spirits, word spirit

       in the Hebrew the rauch)

 

1. The word ministering and servant, combined with “flaming fire”. (Says they

       attenders or attendants, and they were worshippers)

 

1. This ties service in the heavenly temple. (And being attendants of the altar,

       and we can see this in Is. 6:1-6 as Is. Is purified by the coal from the altar)

 

1. His throne would be forever and ever. (And His “scepter” which means

       branch, tribe, clan is justice)

 

5. Third, He is before the foundation of the world:

 

1. Writer uses in the beginning. (Heb. says His face was before time, or before

       time begin showing a beginning of time as we know it)

1. But time started when he established. (Heb. means time started before He

       established or instructed creation, spoke it into existence)

 

1. The writer uses to words for Lord. (Yeh-ho-vah meaning the most high, or

       self existing one, and Aw-done meaning sovereign, controller of all things

       and my owner)

 

1. David calls Aw-done his sovereign. (And says Aw-done will set at

       Yeh-ho-vah’s right hand until His enemies are made His foot stool)

 

1. His feet on the foot stool is a reference to a conquering king. (We looked at

       Josh. 10:24 were they put their feet on the defeated kings neck)

 

6. In this next section the writer calls for us to pay attention to what is being said.

 

7. Let’s read Heb. 2:1-4, Pray!

 

 

1. We are not to neglect what has been said. V1

 

1. The word “therefore” is referring to what has just been said.

 

1. The writer in this passage says “we must” pay attention:

 

1. The word must in the GK. (Is it is “necessary” which tells us that what is

           about to be said is something that is not just good to know, but

           necessary for us to know)

 

1. Now remember this. (It is necessary for us to know based on the

           Messiahship and the Sonship of Yeshua)

 

1. Sometimes in our world we think it is good to know. (Which leads us to

           idea it is not necessarily a must)

 

2. We need to pay even more attention to what we have heard:

 

1. These words to pay more attention to is a verb. (It tells us we need to take

           action to something the writer is talking about)

 

1. And the way we “take action” to it. (GK is to make is apart of our lives, it

         it means to attach ones self to, to hold or to cleave to)

 

1.   So we are to cleave to, or to make it apart of our lives. (Those things we

          have heard, or to what is being taught here)

 

3. So we will not “drift away”:

 

1. The words “drift away”. (GK means to be carried away, to slip away

           from us, referring to our salvation)

 

1. This idea is not a new concept. (Look at Prov. 14:14 this word disloyal is

           is backslider or to go back, Look at Hosea 4:16 it speaks of a cow and

           idea is the cow will not go forward and has dug in their hooves and

          will not move forward)

 

1. So by not making these things apart of our lives. (We will back slide or

           move back to what is not true)

 

 

 

1. The message spoken is legally binding. V2-3

 

1. We must pay attention to this, it is very important.

 

1. The message spoken through angels:

 

1. In these verses the writer speaks of the Law. (And he points out that the

           law came to Moses by Yahweh, through angels) Look at Dt. 33:2 holy

           ones meaning angels, Look at Acts 7:51-53, Gal. 3:19

 

1. The writer is still developing the idea of a superior ministry. (Over the

           ministry of the angels, as in Yashua’s appearance an message)

 

1. The writer says that the message from the angels. (Given by Yahweh

           through the angels was Legally binding)

 

2. And because it was legally binding received just punishment:

 

1. Legally binding. (GK means steadfast, or firm, not changing the only

           law used for judgment)

 

1. And because it is the only law used. (It received a just punishment for

           breaking the law, that was given by the angels)

1.   He is not saying the law is inferior, or it wasn’t from Yahweh. (But the

           messengers were inferior)

 

3. How will we escape if we neglect our salvation:

 

1. If you were given just punishment for breaking the law. (That was given

           through the angels, he is speaking of the messengers here)

 

1. This salvation is really important. (Because it was given and confirmed by

            Yashua Himself, and we have proof of it, it was confirmed to us)

 

1. The word “confirm”. (GK means to establish and to make firm, to make

           sure to us, He identifies himself as being one of those that was there)

 

1. They had listened to Him speak. (He taught us all we needed to know

            about Him and His purpose)

 

 

 

III.  They saw all of this verified to them. V4

 

1. We need to look at this carefully.

 

1. At the time we heard him, Yahweh verified:

 

1. Sign in the GK. (That which He was distinguished from others, so He

           was different than anyone else, He was set apart from others)

 

37. Look at Jn 5:36-37. (This was a time when the Jewish leaders saw

           Yashua healed a man at the pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath, Yashua

            Himself speaks of the witness of the Father)

 

1. According to Yashua this event. (Was a witness from the Father of who

           He is, so the writer is using the same measurement)

 

2. He did various miracles:

 

22. Look at Acts 2:22. (This was immediately after tongues of fire at

           Peter is speaking to the crowd telling them Yashua was pointed out

           To them by Yahweh through miracles, etc.)

 

1. We find this true through Scripture. (Including Ex. 7:3 where Yahweh

            Tells Moses He will harden Pharaoh’s heart and do signs and wonders)

 

1. So this seems to be a pattern Yahweh uses. (To verify who He is and the

          messenger He sent, but in this case the Messiah by the resurrection)

 

3. He also gave a distribution of Gifts by the Holy Spirit:

 

1. These gifts are those given to believers. (GK for gifts is a distribution, so

           it is in reference to the believer being given a distribution)

 

7. We see this in 1 Cor. 12:4-7. (A manifestation of the Holy Spirit is given

            to each believer for the benefit of all, common good)

 

1. Manifestation means to show ones self. (So the Holy Spirit is showing

          Himself through believers by this gift, and is a witness of Yahweh)

 

1. According to His will meaning Yahweh’s. (So it is the same in 1 Cor.

           12:11 and here in Heb. 2:4, it is Yahweh who decides the gift given)

 

1. This word “will” is. (GK means according to the purpose He has,

           meaning the gifts are given to fulfill His purpose in the congregation)
